Pre Production - Shooting Schedule

Shooting Schedule

This is the shooting schedule produced by Jess in our group which contains the basic elements of the shots that we will require to do for both performance and narrative. This will help us when we are filming as it displays the series of shots that we need to film and the locations where they are held.

Storyboard

This is our storyboard drawn by Daniel Wilson. We took photos of each panel and edited them onto a document individually.

Pre-Production Editing Techniques

Pre-Production - Editing Techniques

These are some editing techniques that we experimented with the camera and Final Cut Pro X, which was done because it was to help develop our skills with the camera and editing. In this video we tried reversing the clip of someone dropping a pen which turned out well in my opinion, reversing someone walking up some stairs and duplicating a person in a clip. This video was also created to help us with ideas and prepare for our own music video and to better understand how to use this effects along with how they work.

Target Audience Research

Target Audience Research

This is our target audience research where Kyle and Jess went out and did a survey to some people about their opinions on the song, and the audience they think would be suitable for the songs of the following:

Foo Fighters - The Pretender
Carly Rae Jepson - Call Me Maybe
Orson - No Tomorrow

The song that we plan to do for our music video would be Orson - No Tomorrow. It seems that our audience will be of a much younger audience, mainly male teenagers as it seems from around 15-20 year olds. I originally assumed that the video will be suitable for a young audience, however it was better to see peoples thoughts since they are around the similar age group.

Digipack Ideas

Digipack Ideas

As for our digipack ideas we have thought of a some ideas of what we could do however we haven't settled fully on what we should do for the design.

One of the ideas was for the front cover that we should have four panels and on each one is a face of a band member and they would each have a different moustache which would be edited on. This wasn't our final idea but we thought it would create a humorous effect and a graphical theme similar to what many rock genres revolve around, such as for example Green Day.

Another idea was that we would based or digipack on photos that we would take of the band members around when we film our performance scene. As for the design and layout we are unsure of as we do not have any photos to manipulate and experiment with on Photoshop so we will decide on the design once we have either gain ideas or acquired photos of the band members.

Group Treatment Idea

Group Treatment for Music Video

Orson - No Tomorrow

After a discussion between our group members we decided on what song we should do for our music video, Orson - No Tomorrow.

This music video will be a mix of performance and narrative, the basic story is about a guy who is late for band practise and goes through many terrible events before he arrives there. In between the narrative will be cuts of the band performing the song however you can see that one member is not there.

The narrative will be shot in a first person perspective of the band member until the end where we will reveal his face to the audience. The story will start off with the band member waking up to the alarm of his phone, he then looks through his text messages from the band asking where is he along with many missed calls from them. He gets dressed and ready to go and try and arrive at the practise before it ends.

The next scene the protagonist walks out the door of his house and starts walking until he is abruptly pooped on by a bird, he looks up and waves his fists in anger towards the sky. The shot cuts to the protagonist leaving the house again with a new jacket on, as he takes one step in front of him pours down with bird poop. There is a slight pause after and the band member sprints away from his house.

We then see the protagonist walking down a street where he meets a man having trouble lifting objects into his car which the band member decides to kindly assist him. After he is done he sees a man leaving his house and starts shouting at the protagonist and the man who he helped, who then suddenly puts on a balaclava over his head and runs to the driver seat. The protagonist is shocked and confused and runs away again.

In the 4th narrative scene the protagonist arrives in town, we see a guy dressed up in a costume handing out drinking awareness leaflets. The band member feeling stressed out gets handed a leaflet to which he refuses, however the guy in a costume is persistent to which the protagonist responds by knocking the leaflets out of his hands. He continues walking and then gets shoved from behind by the guy in a costume who looks really angry and starts chasing him around.

Finally escaping from the guy the protagonist arrives at to what seems to be a safe area, he hears some chanting in a small building. Being curious he has a slight peek inside and sees a room filled with candles and a symbol on the floor, he then sees a group of people worshipping to what seems to be Satan. Feeling frightened the protagonist runs again.

He arrives at the entrance of the studio and enters the room, we finally see his face and his smiles for a second and then changes to a more sad expression. All his efforts were in vain as we see the room is empty meaning that that his band had already left, the video ends here.

Treatment Idea Mindmap - Time Lapse

Treatment Idea Mindmap

This is a video showing us brain storming our first ideas for the music video in time lapse, we discussed things such as it should be a full performance based video or just a narrative, what is our target audience and mise en scene.

One of our early ideas of the narrative was a  guy getting ready to go to a house party, which we would then see him arrive there. We didn't really like the idea of the house party and it was difficult to do other things as the song is about teenagers having fun drinking and not thinking about tomorrow. Although in the end we came up with a reasonable idea.

This is a screenshot of the mindmap we made.

Music Video Treatment Idea

Treatment Idea

Rise Against - Injection

This is a tratment idea that I have thought up for a music video. The theme of the video will be a Performance based music video mixed with a short narrative story that links in with the lyrics.

The video will begin with the band performing in a hospital (the main location) however the lighting is very dark making it difficult to notice at first glance, as soon as the vocals of the song begins we see the singer waking up from a hospital bed who is the protagonist of the narrative. We see a point of view shot of him looking around the room slowly with his vision eventually getting better, which he then suddenly he has a headache and starts having small quick flashbacks. During this we will see the band preforming for a few seconds which will then quickly cut back onto him having a headache.

In the chorus of the song we see him tied to the a hospital bed surrounded by doctors, he struggles and tries to break free and resisting the doctors that are trying to restrain him. We see a syringe fall to the ground in slow motion along with other tools that have been knocked over. It then cuts to a room where the singer is unconscious, he begins to have nightmares of the past and we see several flashback of him in his normal life where nothing was wrong yet. The flashback shots of him in his normal life will consist of jump cuts of him traveling to work in the subway and then arriving at his office followed by a time lapse of the day.
After the scene cuts immediately to the band performing in the operating room , we see a variety of shots of the band playing with their instruments as the lights are flashing on and off, although the pace of the video will have the band cutting in now and then to show them preforming. At the end of the video the scene fades out as soon as the song finishes with a slow motion blur.
