Performance: Muse - Starlight
This is a music video of Starlight by Muse, and clearly displays visuals of a performance based music video, as the clip consists mostly of the band performing.
Firth's Theory
This applies to one of Firth's theories being performance as the the majority of the video focuses on the band playing, such as a series of close ups of the singer cutting to the other band members qhich conveys a sense of in-concert expierence.
Sven E Carlsson
This could also apply to one of Sven E Carlssons theory, commercial exhibitionist which in certain performance type videos the performer will be made into a selling item. in other words this music video was produced to promote and sell the band, and shows to the audience (fans) what the tour experience would be like.
Narrative: Train - Drive By
This is Drive By by Train, the style of the video shows that it is a Narrative based music video, this is shown by the story of the video, about a guy who is chasing after a girl who supposedly looks like his ex.
Firth's Theory
The narrative in this music video is a typical love story of a guy chasing after a girl, as for Firth's theory is that love stories are the most popular, this is true as many narrative based videos are about love.
Sven E Carlsson
This video applies to Sven's theory of Narrative, which is that it contains a story that is easily followed up and may not include lip synchronisation (In this case it does), also it is a slient movie with a musical background.
Conceptual: Gary Jules - Mad World
This clip performed by Gary Jules is a Conceptual clip, due to the fact that the majority of the video consists of children forming together to create images from an aerial perspective.
Firth's Theory
In this video the Artist is rarely shown now and then on top of a school building where we see from his perspective looking down at children who are making animated figures on a sidewalk. The song and the images create a sort of mood whilst match some of the lyrics and some that can have other meanings.
Sven E Carlsson
Carlsson would describe this clip as an Art clip essentially conceptual, its very hard to tell if the artist is lip-syncing in this as the quality of the video isn't clear enough for you to see if he miming the lyrics. As for the clip itself it contains no perceptible visual narrative as it isn't clear at first what the video is about.
Here are some of the things that weren't mentioned:
Televised Bard
This is when the video is a singing storyteller which focuses on the visaul narrative that matches or shows the meaning behind the lyrics.
Electronic Shaman
This is when an artist is never seen performing in their video and it mainly consist of the vocals/music of the artist.

The Conventions of Pop
1. The locations for the genre pop have many variations and can be random sometimes. A common location is an indoor set which has been designed specifically with props, although they also use outdoor attractions and is usually filmed in the daytime.
2. The camera will be focused on the main artist often as that is the main selling point of the video, especially if he/she is a solo artist because it helps advertise/promote the artist to the audience so that they may recognise them more.
3. Another convention that occurs more often when the artist is a female, there tends to be voyeurism (shots of the aritsts body) giving the artist a sex appeal towards the audience in order to keep them focused on watching the video.
4. Typically there will be dancing in most pop music videos, the main artist will be in the lead followed by extras and they tend to match the rhythm of the music as well as the pace and shots of the whole video itself.
5. As for the costume the clothing will be flashy in order to be eye catchy to the audience, and there are a variety of what they can wear compared to other genres of music.

The Conventions of Hip Hop
1. The low camera angle shots are usually done to make the artist more dominating over the audience as if the artist is looking down at us and we are looking up at a more larger image, or possible the opposite and we see an aerial shot of the artist.
2. The camera will typically focus on the artist including many close ups allowing the viewers to focus solely on them.
3. As for the type of clothing the artist will wear casual clothing, such as hoodies and caps with a kind of street like style.
4. The pace will be quite slow and steady, the shots are also slow paced to match the beat of the audio and the vocalist/rapper.
5. The artist will often be looking directly at the camera, almost as if they are trying to sing to the audience.

The Conventions of Rock
1. One of the main features of the Rock genre is that most of the time the audience will see the band performing on stage or a set location, this is often seen typically in music videos of band such as of the guitarist, drummer, bass, and singer/vocalist.
2. Another convention is close ups of the one of the members of the band, usually it will be the singer as he is the one singing the lyrics and also it focuses on them more so that the audience will remember them thus promoting the band/album.
3. Often the performance will be based on a set location or a stage with lights, which suggests to the audience what the experience of the concert/tour will feel like. On some occasions there might be a crowd watching them perform.
4. The costume that Rock genre artists will normally be wearing are dark clothing, such as black jeans, black t-shirt and ether messy or styled hair.
5. There will also be a narrative of somewhat in some rock genres often expressing emotion into the video by telling a story that either follows the lyrics or sometimes contradicts it, whilst also showing the band performing.

Music Video Analysis - Green Day
Green Day American Idiot
The music video I am doing an analysis on is by Green Day, and the song of the video is American Idiot. The genre of their music is Punk Rock and can be categorised some other alternatives (Rock, Pop Rock). Characteristics of this genre are displayed in the mise-en-scene and costume design, as Rock artists are often wearing leathers, jeans, plain t-shirts, and most of their hair is styled.
The video cuts to the beat often to match the band playing the instruments followed by many close ups of the singer lip syncing to the music, the video is also very fast paced with some quick jump cuts, for example at the beginning when the shots jump from a close up of the vocalists face to a TV with the image of the album cover and then a long shot of him alone playing the guitar.
As for inter textual references in the music video is the American play in the background whilst the band are performing, also referencing the name of the song "American Idiot" as for other references visually there aren't any more. The music video is mostly performance based as in the majority of the video you see that band performing with many close ups and long shots focused mainly on them. Also generally Green Day's music are quite rebellious almost like how the media tend to present how teenagers act.
In conclusion it is safe to assume that this music video clearly shows its genre because of the contents in it, such as the costume, camera, and editing. Typically the Rock genre has many shots of the band performing and quick shots of the instruments which match to the beat of the music.

Album Cover Analysis - Green Day
American Idiot
The album cover consists of an image of a hand holding a bloody heart shaped grenade dripping on the palm, this suggests that the hand holding the grenade symbolises being rebellious, almost like how teenagers are seen as. The colours and the format of the text creates a dark serious feeling, black, red, white, they blend well together as the black background brings out the colours of the image and text.
21st Century Breakdown
The centre of the album cover shows a male and female teenager kissing whilst in the blackground is a graffiti covered wall. The teenagers kissing may suggest the fun of being in the prime of their youth and causing trouble such as vandilism and defacement on public attractions which also links to the graffiti being behind them.
Basket Case
There is alot going on in this album cover, the style is very cartoony and looks hand drawn by a student/teenager (doodles). There is an explosion in the centre, around it are many things that do not link together. The images suggest that the theme is crazy and nothing makes sense seeing as all of it is random.
